Papco Industries was founded in 1978 as the Papailias Expansion Joint Company by Mr. John G. Papailias, then President and CEO, in New York City. In 1984, the company name was changed to the current Papco Industries, Inc. The company began as a single person manufacturers’ representative organization with a small (400 square foot) office setting, selling various products including non-metallic expansion joints which were manufactured in Europe. In 1982, Papco moved to Long Island City, NY into a 3000 square foot facility and began manufacturing non-metallic expansion joints itself. In 1987, having outgrown the Long Island City site, Papco moved its offices and flexible element manufacturing to a 10,000 square foot building in Northvale, NJ. Shortly thereafter, an additional 15,000 square feet of manufacturing space was acquired in Highland Park, NJ to fabricate the expansion joint mounting metal framework. Most recently, Papco Industries has combined both its flexible element and its metal manufacturing into a 30,000 square foot facility also located in Northvale, NJ.

In a relatively short period of time, Papco Industries has accomplished a great deal and has become one of the most admired and respected suppliers of non-metallic expansion joints. Some of the reasons for Papco’s success are:

1. Papco is a member of the Fluid Sealing Association, Ducting systems Non-Metallic Expansion Joint Division. As such, Papco has access to all the latest specifications and technical information. One aspect of being a member of FSA is that raw material suppliers routinely offer information about the latest advances in material science as related to non-metallic expansion joints.

2. Papco innovated a procedure and the equipment necessary for the molding of continuous-corners in U-shaped expansion joints. Papco currently has eight fully automated corner molding machines in operation. The automated machinery, along with a perfected technique, produces the finest integral molded corners in the industry.

3. Papco’s Materials Engineers developed a composite fiberglass and PTFE material which is known by the trade name Texflex®. Unlike any other commercially available material, Texflex provides zero permeation from both faces of the composite, protecting the inner structural layer from chemical attack and thereby making it ideal as a gas seal in a non-metallic expansion joint. Since no machinery was available to produce such a material, Papco’s mechanical Engineers designed and built the machinery necessary to mass-produce Texflex.

4. The machinery designed and built to produce Texflex was also designed to have a second purpose: to press vulcanize both EPDM and fluoroelastomer. Papco’s Material Engineers created formulations of EPDM and fluoroelastomers to meet the special demands of flue duct expansion joints. Papco controls all facets of manufacturing of these materials, including the purchasing of the raw pellet material and has the material mixed and calendered by an ISO-9001 certified vendor. lay-up of the reinforcement and final vulcanization is performed in Papco’s Northvale, NJ facility. Papco offers its customers records documenting the complete traceability of the KFM or Fluoroestomer material and/or test date in accordance with Fluid Sealing Association specification FSA-DSJ-401-02. Papco routinely and without hesitation constructs custom mixed and calendered material in accordance with detailed customer specifications.

5. In an effort to meet ever promised delivery date, and to be able to offer customers the latest information regarding their order, Papco installed a networked computer system and the best manufacturing software available. The computer system now provides each employee with the latest information on any order on a company-wide basis.

6. Through the years, Papco’s list of satisfied customers has continually grown. Papco has available for customer review many different customer reference lists. Papco invites any potential customer to contact the listed users and get first-hand information regarding how Papco’s expansion joints are performing.
